About Me

Alexandra Drane sets the vision and strategy for Eliza Corporation, and is responsible for maintaining Eliza Corporation's leadership position in the healthcare industry. She has devoted her career to inspiring people to lead healthier, happier and more productive lives through the use of innovative technology, and her entrepreneurial spirit and passion for technology and design have led to the launch of four successful healthcare ventures over the past 20 years. Alexandra has proven herself a visionary and an innovator, whose ideas on using technology to engage people in their health - and her belief in adding a touch of joy to the often staid world of healthcare communications have been adopted by the nation's top healthcare organizations.

Alexandra also is a co-founder of Engage with Grace, a not-for-profit movement launched in October 2008 aimed at helping people understand, communicate and have honored their end-of-life wishes. She received the Boston Business Journal's Champions of Healthcare? award for her efforts in this area, and Engage with Grace has been added to the healthcare lexicon as a top-ten phrase.

Based on her experience engaging people in conversation about health topics, in 2010 she co-founded a non-profit, web-based movement called SeduceHealth that aims to reframe how the healthcare industry communicates with the people it serves by adding greater passion, joy, and inspiration.

Prior, Alexandra was a founder of three other healthcare ventures - all focused on developing products that enable individual behavior change through the use of technology. The output of these ventures included the web-enabled injury-tracking software system adopted by the U.S. Olympic Committee, software that automates dialysis clinics across the U.S., and a medical device proven in clinical trials to improve asthma treatment compliance by over 35%.

Alexandra holds a bachelor's degree in economics from Tufts University, where she graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. She has been named to the Boston Business Journal's "40 Under 40" list and also appears on the Healthspottr Future Health 100 list, which includes some of the most creative and influential people working in healthcare today. Alexandra sits on the Board of Eliza Corporation, the Board of Advisors of TEDMED, the Harvard Executive Sleep Council, and is Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees for Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (a Harvard Teaching Hospital) in Boston, MA. She also sits on the Board of Directors and the Operations Committee of the Coalition to Transform Advanced Care (C-TAC) and co-chairs C-TAC?s Public Engagement Workgroup. Alexandra is a member of the Health Executive Leadership Network, Women Business Leaders of the U.S. Health Care Industry Foundation, and is a trustee of several charitable trusts.

Q&A with Alexandra

HxD asked speakers to tell us what inspires and drives them in healthcare and design. Check out our Q&A with Alexandra Drane!

« Previous Next »
  • Q1: What is your burning mission in health?

Helping people become happier, healthier, and more productive through the authentic, relevant - even flirty - use of communication, technology and design.

  • Q3: Why HxD?

HxD brings together people who are re-designing the healthcare space - whether than means infusing it with greater intimacy, greater style, or just giving it more of that special something that everybody wants to have. It's an honor to be part of a crowd of people making choices that affect real change.

  • Q4: Why come to your session?

You are a person who has worries, beliefs, ideas, preferences, values, challenges, and hopefully also a sense of humor - so too do the people we are all trying to serve. Let's bring together our real selves and talk about the real issues driving health, and figure out what we as individuals, and as corporate citizens, can do about it.

CONFERENCE | Monday, March 25

Vulnerability is an issue like never before... is it treatable?

At Eliza, we've spent over a dozen years talking to people about the things that impact their ability to be their happiest, healthiest, and most productive. One of the things we've learned is that a person's life context issues - such as caring for an aging parent or dealing with financial stress, and how well they cope with these issues - has a measurable impact on health. This research is the basis of what we call the Vulnerability Index, and we were honored to share some of those details at last year's Health Experience Design conference.

As we've come to better understand Vulnerability, we've come to be better at tracking it - and our data confirms what we see on the news on a daily basis. We are living in a world under enormous amounts of stress. So we're not just identifying and measuring Vulnerability, we?re making our research even more actionable by recommending solutions that can help mitigate Vulnerability in key populations. For inspiration, we're turning to the kinds of closed ecosystems that by their very nature have little choice but to treat people wholly, not just as a sum of their conditions. This forcing function - the need to understand someone's entire life context - can lead to huge improvements in health and wellbeing for the people they serve.

Join our session to better understand how we can help measure Vulnerability in actionable ways, develop solutions based on successful models outside the traditional healthcare space, and then analyze the results of these interventions to determine whether or not this pervasive condition is in fact, treatable.

"Last year's HxD conference was so amazingly inspiring, and has definitely caused me to strive harder and become more passionate about improving our healthcare system." - 2012 HxD Attendee
