Q&A with Dante

HxD asked speakers to tell us what inspires and drives them in healthcare and design.

« Previous Next »
  • Q1: What is your burning missing in health?

My burning mission in health is to help patients and doctors communicate more effectively, enabling informed collaboration on difficult healthcare decisions. Because people are more than just patients, health is intertwined with culture, and misinformation outnumbers information, this is a task that requires design, strategy, empathy, and oversight.

  • Q2: What is one thing you want everyone to see?

Cynefin, a framework for sense-making and a systems-thinking approach to design. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cynefin] Cynefin helps us understand the type of problem we have so we know whether it requires process, expertise, experimentation, or innovation to address.

  • Q3: Why it inspires you?

Cynefin and many other things that inspire and energize me share the common attribute that they multiply my toolset by giving me new ways to apply everything I know, rather than just a sub-set.

  • Q4: What is your patient story?

My son was injured in a workplace accident...I was there, it happened just inches from me, and I was helpless to act in time. In the hours and days that followed thousands of decisions came at me at light-speed, and all my years of working alongside medical professionals did nothing to mitigate the complexity, anxiety, fear, and confusion...all while I had to give comfort to a very frightened boy. Had there been a way to understand my options in real time, many decisions would have been different. That is why enabling better communication and collaborative decision making is my mission.

  • Q5: Why HxD?

Health, especially as it relates to nurturing and protecting one's family, is the most human experience we have. While it's satisfying as a designer to improve travel booking, ecommerce, and investing, nothing satisfies the humanity in me like making a difference in healthcare.

  • Q6: Why should someone come to your session?

It's a proven, tangible framework that can be applied to nearly any healthcare context. It will help the designer become a strategist. It will multiply your tools, not just add to them. It will give you command of language and relationships. It will be immediately applicable to your work. And best of all, there will be prizes!

Influence Mapping in Healthcare: How information design and organizational dynamics can improve the quality of health communication

The language is arcane, the gap in understanding profound. The stakes are high, the bureaucracy dense. There is no “add to cart” button, no standard for interaction design. And worst of all, the most important part of the interaction takes place in a small room with no windows and a sign on the wall that tells you not to use your phone. It sounds like the plot for a horror movie. To many people facing serious health issues, that’s exactly what it is. We have the content that patients need to understand their condition and their treatment options. We have the tools that doctors need to make timely, accurate treatment decisions. What we haven’t had is a way to ensure that these resources are used at the right time and in the right way, often because we are evaluating only their value and usability.

This discussion will demonstrate how applying the techniques of influence mapping in organizational Dynamics and information design can help discover the points of failure in healthcare interactions and address them with appropriate content, tools, and techniques.
