About Me

Brian created Inspire in 2005 with the goal of accelerating clinical trial recruitment through the use of safe, trusted online social networks, organized by medical condition, for patients and their caregivers. Brian believes that patient contributions to medical progress have been historically underappreciated, and great progress in medical research will result from involving patients and fully valuing their contributions.

Previously, Brian was responsible for technology strategy for The Washington Post, where he developed innovative products and acted as a technology liaison between the newspaper and washingtonpost.com. Brian has been an Internet entrepreneur since 1994 when he founded worldweb.net, a content management software company that created and launched over 100 websites for major publishers including U.S. News & World Report, Hachette Filipacchi, Time Warner, and The Washington Post Company.

Brian has degrees in physics and economics from The George Washington University. He is a regular author and speaker on topics related to e-health, patient empowerment, and healthcare social media.

Q&A with Brian

HxD asked speakers to tell us what inspires and drives them in healthcare and design. Check out our Q&A with Brian Loew!

« Previous Next »
  • Q1: What is your burning mission in health?

To enable patients to connect with one another, share with one another, and through doing so, improve their health.

  • Q2: What is something you want everyone to see?

The real-time “fire hose” of patient engagement in Inspire: www.inspire.com/now.

  • Q3: Why it inspires you?

It is a vivid way to understand that these communities are living/breathing/thriving. It gets to the heart of what patients are seeking and the stories they tell one another.

  • Q3: What is your patient story?

Among our amazing members, one who stands out is Katherine Leon, a DC-area mother of two young sons who spearheaded research into a rare heart condition, known as SCAD, that nearly killed her nearly a decade ago. She was driven by the lack of information from her doctors. Through Inspire, she ultimately found 75 similar women and approached a Mayo Clinic cardiologist who launched an unprecedented clinical study with their help. Katherine is active still in the Inspire/WomenHeart Support Community, and is a voice of wisdom and comfort to women newly diagnosed with SCAD.

  • Q3: Why HxD?

It’s great to participate in a patient-centric conference where you can “learn from a network of disrupters.”.

  • Q3: Why come to your session?

You’ll hear stories about medical progress enabled by patients. They are smart and selfless, engaging with one another and scientists to help themselves and advance medical research.

CONFERENCE | Monday, March 25

Patients Have the Power

Brian will discuss several stories from Inspire’s rare disease communities: Rare coronary disease, Tuberous Sclerosis Complex, and Neurofibromatosis. One story is about 100 women with a rare heart disorder, spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD), who leveraged the Inspire/WomenHeart Support Community to spur the Mayo Clinic to launch new clinical research. The self-described “SCAD Ladies”--most of whom don’t know one other’s real names--accomplished within an online community what traditional research hadn’t done.

"Last year's HxD conference was so amazingly inspiring, and has definitely caused me to strive harder and become more passionate about improving our healthcare system." - 2012 HxD Attendee
