About Me

Kijana’s professional and personal pursuits have aligned over time to focus on observing and improving (when necessary) the human experience. For the past several years she has continued to fine tune her skills of observation, analysis, and communication in order to capture and share what areas of different user experiences could benefit from better design. As a senior user experience researcher at projekt202, Kijana has been directly involved in user observation and design for Agresso, Charles Schwab, Samsung, Kronos, PepsiCo, SolarBridge, eMDs, RMA, and others.

Kijana’s background in engineering and psychology helped to guide her to meaningful interactions with users and experience improvement while she worked in the Internal Tools Group at Motorola and then Freescale Semiconductor. She holds a B.S. in Computer Science from Rice University in Houston and a M.S. in Information Studies from the University of Texas at Austin.

Q&A with Kijana

HxD asked speakers to tell us what inspires and drives them in healthcare and design. Check out our Q&A with Martin Adler!

  • Q1: What is your burning mission in health?

Help people everywhere break down barriers and overcome obstacles to optimal health through thoughtful and heartfelt design.

  • Q3: Why it inspires you?

I love Dr. Evans’ videos. The content is certainly interesting, but I think the most inspiring thing to me is that this physician has made such a beautiful effort to break down topics in a way that is engaging and prompts me to make real change. In another context, it would be difficult to read through a detailed scientific article on stress or sleep deprivation. Dr. Evans has found a way to make this important information accessible and easy to share with others

  • Q4: Why HxD?

Design transcends disciplines. We believe that the fundamental principles of good design can help anyone from financial specialists to nurses achieve optimal results. After all, we are designing for human beings. The knowledge we gain from other applications is turned into wisdom that can inform the facilitation and creation of better experiences for all.

  • Q5: What is your patient story?

Although I’ve been fortunate to be fairly healthy throughout my life, this past year, I was forced to make the frustrating round of doctors and specialists when a mysterious lump appeared in my neck. My condition was finally diagnosed as a rare birth defect, a venolymphatic malformation, that usually occurs in children. For several months, the uncertainty and shifting opinions caused me constant worry. My life came to a standstill. While I wanted to educate myself as much as possible, finding the right answers from trusted sources proved to be time consuming and difficult. Thankfully, I got the right tests, found the right specialist, and underwent the right treatment. Most importantly, I feel like my health journey in this particular instance improved the moment I found a specialist who actually listened to me and my fears instead of just jumping to a diagnostic conclusion.

  • Q5: Why come to your session?

We are really excited about how we were able to use tried and true methods, as well as some experimentation, to arrive at the core of a great patient experience – improved access to nurses. We started with a broad landscape of possibility and through careful analysis were able to focus on what patients were really thinking and feeling.

Rethinking the Fertility Patient Journey

The Reproductive Medicine Associates of Texas (RMA) is not the first client to engage projekt202 in the hopes of becoming better, faster, more efficient, and more creative in their approach to problem-solving and ways upon they offer their services; but they are the first to ask us to apply our processes and skills to finding solutions in physical and emotional space. We believe that our findings and the documentation we have begun to create in response to our observations and hypotheses offers an opportunity to begin a very fruitful dialogue between interaction designers and healthcare providers on how the principles of user-centered design can be applied to improve the experience of medical service for both patients and providers.
