About Me

“I am intrigued by people; their thoughts, needs, desires, behaviors, the contexts in which they live and especially all the things that they are not aware of themselves. Only by identifying these insights our designs can become truly people centric.”

Jeanine works as a People Research Consultant at Philips Design Healthcare. She coordinates and conducts contextual research activities together with multiple disciplines to uncover key insights and future directions to inform and inspire strategy and design for Healthcare. She has worked on various front-end innovation projects gaining a deep understanding of patients, families and care professionals in the areas like mother and child care, stroke, oncology and COPD.

Jeanine was born in Roermond, the Netherlands in 1986. She studied Industrial Design at the Eindhoven University of Technology, graduating with honors in 2011. After her successful graduation project at Philips’ Ambient Experience Design group - where she researched the labor and delivery experience of women in the hospital and developed an innovative design concept to enhance this experience - she joined Philips Design Healthcare as a People Research Consultant later that year.

Experience Design for Labor & Delivery

Did you know that more than 1 in 6 women (in the Netherlands) look back negatively on their birth experience three years postpartum? In this session Jeanine Kierkels, people research consultant at Philips Design Healthcare, will present the new experience design concept that addresses this issue and that Philips is currently testing in the Máxima Medical Center in the Netherlands. Starting with extensive field research, this project rapidly evolved from a design concept to an actual test setting in the hospitals’ delivery rooms.

The concept takes the philosophy of Ambient Experience into a new health setting and aims to facilitate a more positive experience by visualizing the progress of labor and providing real-time breathing support via a smartphone app prior to delivery.

"Last year's HxD conference was so amazingly inspiring, and has definitely caused me to strive harder and become more passionate about improving our healthcare system." - 2012 HxD Attendee
