Q&A with Ivor

HxD asked speakers to tell us what inspires and drives them in healthcare and design.

« Previous Next »
  • Q1: What is your burning mission in health?

To ENGAGE parents in their child’s health care in away that will EMPOWER them to maximize their time with the doctor.

  • Q3: Why it inspires you?

It encourages me to ask the tough questions – because they are necessary.

  • Q4: What is your patient story?

I love caring for children because parents will do for their kids what they won’t do for themselves. A shy, insecure mom will speak up even when she’s afraid if it means getting something she needs for her child. I was caring for one such child whose mom had a reputation of being very belligerent with clinic staff. Her children had complex medical conditions and her belligerent request were not unreasonable, her behavior just wasn’t socially acceptable in that environment. At risk of being “released” from our clinic, we had a conversation. We made a deal. I would help her navigate the healthcare system until she could effectively do it herself. That conversation led to a transformation for her – and for me. Her belligerence care from a place of insecurity and a lack of understanding how the system worked. With a little information and support she was on her way. My help was not needed for long. I soon became one of the may physicians she “managed” in her children’s care. It was a great feeling to no longer be needed.

  • Q5: Why HxD?

Because including all people in the innovation process to improve health has to be a conscious, planned and purposeful process.

  • Q6:Why come to your session?

Improving health for the least of us is the responsibility of all of us.

Inclusion by Design

Social media and mobile technology are disrupting the way patients and health systems interact and our expectations of how individuals and systems manage health and wellness in addition to illness. As early adopters, minority populations, who suffer from some of the greatest health disparities, are positioned to take a lead in leveraging innovations to improve their health outcomes. However, it is important that we discuss ways for companies and developers to partner with underserved populations and the providers who care for them to create solutions that are applicable and relevant to the realities of the environment (economic, social and physical) in which they live.

"Last year's HxD conference was so amazingly inspiring, and has definitely caused me to strive harder and become more passionate about improving our healthcare system." - 2012 HxD Attendee
