Q&A with Michael

HxD asked speakers to tell us what inspires and drives them in healthcare and design. Check out our Q&A with Michael Hawley!

  • Q1: What is your burning mission in health?

To make the healthcare system easier for everyone so patients and providers can focus on care.

  • Q3: Why it inspires you?

I can't keep up with all of the lingo in a typical healthcare system conversation. The Stay Smart, Stay Healthy videos do a great job of speaking in plain language and helping a broad audiences understand what the healthcare system means to them. More importantly, the initiative is squarely focused on informing the consumer or patient. The company that sponsored it (Humana) certainly has business goals, but they've found the right balance between their goals and promotion of health & wellness - a goal that will have benefits for everyone.

  • Q4: What is your patient story?

Experiencing my kids' birth was amazing. As they grow up, my wife and I are doing the best we can to provide them with a healthy environment and promote an active lifestyle. However, wading our way through the network of information and health services for wellness, ear infections, diet, immunizations, doctor choices, and prescriptions can be overwhelming. Our hope is that the healthcare system continues to evolve to reduce stress and complexity for parents like us.

  • Q5: Why HxD?

The HxD conference represents a unique opportunity for designers and healthcare professionals to discuss real challenges and success stories of design in healthcare. Many of the issues facing design within healthcare are unique, and the conference is a great forum to address those potential solutions and lessons learned. Plus, there is such a positive vibe to the conference - empathetic designers and healthcare professionals all share a common goal to make the system better for everyone.

  • Q6: Why come to your session?

We can all be more effective working with organizations designing experiences that make a difference. We want to share what we've learned working on a variety of projects within healthcare to further the discussion on approaches to design that can have a real impact.

CONFERENCE | Monday, March 25

Research and Design Methods in Healthcare

Designing experiences that are elegant, simple, intuitive and valuable is hard. Organizations often have a difficult time coming to consensus around design decisions or leveraging outside perspective and research into their design process. In healthcare, the complex web of patient behavior, regulatory systems, and multiple players make the design process that much more challenging. In this fast-paced session, we will share our experiences designing for the multiple facets of healthcare experiences. We will discuss core research and design methods that help overcome organizational barriers to good design, and review research and design methods that work for patient, provider, insurer and other players in healthcare specifically.

Cigna Design Challenge

Too often as American health care consumers we rush to the doctor first and sort through the bills and paperwork later. What could inspire or motivate us to change our behavior so that instead we partner with our health insurers to understand costs, savings, and coverage options ahead of time?
