About Me

Eilidh is a Project Leader and Senior Interaction Design at CIID Consulting, offering strategic design direction for innovation projects – both for the public and private sector. Eilidh is inquisitive by nature and loves nothing more in a project than going out into the world to gain inspiration from people and the cultures they live in – uncovering stories and insights that guide design and innovation. She has worked on projects that fall across a variety of industries and contexts, but more recently has focused her work on innovation in the healthcare sector and complex issues such as obesity, behaviour change, renal dialysis and insulin delivery for base-of-the-pyramid users. With the right team Eilidh believes that the quality and richness of the outcome far exceeds an individually driven project. For her, design does not solely translate to problem solving or ‘fixing’ something. It’s about creating platforms for change, empowering people to make positive decisions in their everyday lives and taking one little step to improving the lives of people.

Q&A with Eilidh

HxD asked speakers to tell us what inspires and drives them in healthcare and design. Check out our Q&A with Amy Cueva!

  • Q1: What is your burning mission in health

To inspire positive behavior change on a systemic and cultural level.

  • Q3: Why it inspires you?

Personally I am fascinated by behaviour change and how different types of motivation affect people’s ability to make and sustain positive health transformation. This TED talk won't have you on the edge of your seat but I think it is a great reference and gives a really clear overview of the self-determination theory and how different types of motivation are promoted.

  • Q3: What is your patient story?

A few years ago I was rushed to hospital with expected appendicitis. From the moment I stepped into the hospital there was miscommunication every step of way - this ranged from my family receiving inaccurate information, what time i would have a procedure, what the procedure was i was even having (...having an invasive operation instead of an ultrasound is quite different!) - the list goes on... All these small failures in the service experience increase a patients feeling of vulnerability and loss of self-dignity. Essentially a patients experience is determined by the system and the system is designed to allow HCP's to perform optimally, not to make a patient feel secure. We need simple tools to bridge the communication gap between the patient and doctor. When patients enter hospital they need to be better informed about what the next step is rather than waiting for their next surprise piece of information, treatment or visit from a doctor.

  • Q3: Why HxD?

The worlds healthcare challenges are increasing with complexity everyday. There is no magic pill to fix these and there is no longer one type of professional or process for solving these challenges. HxD brings together practitioners from a variety of industries to share their knowledge and provoke new thinking in Healthcare design. Ultimately this inspires people and gives them new fuel to improve and create systems, interactions, products and policies that can improve the health of today’s population.

  • Q3: Why come to your session?

Our talk will demonstrate how a new research framework and information visualization methods can inspire you to tackle challenging healthcare issues in ways that will provoke new understanding and build user empathy.

Network of Care for Type 2 Diabetes

Living with type 2 diabetes is a multifaceted condition and a long-term commitment. Patients don’t experience their care or participate in their treatment in isolation, they are surrounded by a network of people - family, friends, peers and care providers. This network of care affects how patients experience their condition, and their ability to manage it both physically, cognitively and emotionally.

Traditional design research methods focus on individuals and personal modes of behaviour change. Innovating in the diabetes care space requires going beyond the individual.

Working with Novo Nordisk, CIID Consulting assembled a 360º view into the networks of care, that support diabetes patients. By approaching the research from a systemic level and studying a patient’s network of support rather than individuals in isolation, the result was a rich and emotional view into the complex interactions and relationships encompassing a patient’s journey with the condition.

By creating a research framework that looked beyond traditional modes of health care delivery, systemic gaps were identified and opportunities for community driven care models were uncovered.

This talk will demonstrate how a new research framework and information visualization methods can inspire you to tackle challenging healthcare issues in ways that will provoke new understanding and build user empathy.
