Speakers

About Me

Amy Cueva is Founder, Chief Experience Officer and healthcare principal at Mad*Pow. Amy's passion for human-centered design has been demonstrated repeatedly in her work for clients like New England Journal of Medicine, Google, Aetna, Fidelity and McKesson. Leading a team of equally fired-up designers, Amy has created strong multi-channel experience strategies, intuitive digital experiences and streamlined processes for Mad*Pow's clients.

Amy is a true believer in the power of research-inspired methodology to address the challenge of competing business goals, customer needs, and technology requirements. With the state of healthcare in our country rapidly approaching a crisis point, harnessing that power has become even more critical. Amy formed the Healthcare Experience Design LinkedIn group and chairs the Conference with that goal in mind, bringing together those invested in the design of healthcare experiences to discuss best practices, trends, challenges and solutions.

Always happy to step up and spread the word about the importance of human-centered design, Amy is a regular speaker at a wide range of industry events. She has presented at HIMSS virtual conference, the World Healthcare Innovation & Technology Congress, the IA Summit, IDEA Conference, the UPA International Conference, and the Center for Connected Health Symposium. She was selected as one of Mass High Tech's Women to Watch in 2009 and her and her business partners were honored to be present on the Inc 500 list of fastest growing privately held companies in 2009.

Q&A with Amy

HxD asked speakers to tell us what inspires and drives them in healthcare and design. Check out our Q&A with Amy Cueva!

  • Q1: What is your burning mission in health?

To ensure the technology we create is helping the people it is meant to in the best way possible.

  • Q2: What is something you want everyone to see?

You may or may not have heard of Regina Holliday's work, but you need to!

  • Q3: Why it inspires you?

When we do our work in conference rooms and behind a computer, the people affected by our decisions and efforts can become distant to us. Regina's story and others like it bring us back to why we all are here. Her passion is an inspiration.

  • Q4: What is your patient story?

We knew my son has had ADD since probably kindergarten, due to teacher reports. We had him tested by two different doctors and they agreed. We tried everything to help him; behavioral therapy, medication, allergy tests, diet modification, and working with teachers and the school. Ever school year was a challenge with complaints of homework, grades, classroom behavior, and visits to the school. We always grappled with deciding whether to medicate or not to medicate, understanding that we wanted him to be successful in school, but didn't want to change who he was - which was creative, energetic, and wonderful. We didn't want him to experience any short term or long term side effects from the medication, including weight, motivation levels, or feeling dependent on medication to be ok. Seeking and piecing together information on the topic from the doctors, psychologists, teachers, the internet, and friends and family was complex and everyone has varying opinions on the subject. To figure out what would work best for us has been a long journey. He is now in high school and is thriving. It is a technical high school and he is experiencing successes and is more motivated to succeed than we have ever seen him. He is happy. That is more than we could ask for.

  • Q5: Why HxD?

HXD is dedicated to improving health through human-centered design. Designers and those who understand design's value come to this conference to get inspired, learn, and meet each other.

  • Q6: Why come to your session?

As an agency, we learn volumes by working with so many different types of organizations across the healthcare spectrum. This participation helps us to see trends and opportunities. I will share these with you during the opening address. Plus - if you make it to my session - then you won't miss a second of Jane McGonical's keynote, which immediately follows!

Opening Address

Why do you attend conferences? To learn new tips and tricks? Affirm you're on the right path? Refresh or rewire your brain? Rub shoulders with people you admire?

When your life's work has meaning, it's not a job, it's a passion. HxD 2013 was designed for you. The you with an insatiable curiosity. The you that's been a patient, or has taken care of one and knows we must do better. The you that got into this work to make a difference.

We are bringing together luminaries in the health care field, giving you access to amazing thinkers, showcasing outstanding work, and making the power of design clear.

The theme of HxD 2013 is well-being as the foundation for health. Speakers will discuss how life--the messy stuff, the real stuff--can either support or interfere with our ability to care for ourselves and our families. We'll ask: How does life management, stress management, relationships, emotions, sleep, and other factors affect our health? How can this thinking be woven into our solutions? What is our role in helping people achieve a fuller sense of well-being?

At HxD 2013, we'll explore behavior change, public health and health literacy, care experiences, managing chronic conditions, design innovation, research and design methods, and case studies. The voice of the patient will be loud and clear - designers who have battled disease will share how it's changed the way they approach their work. You'll even have the chance to tell your own patient story.

This conference demonstrates how bringing together people with shared interests and diverse talents will drive change forward. Come to HxD 2013. Be part of the change design ignites.

"Last year's HxD conference was so amazingly inspiring, and has definitely caused me to strive harder and become more passionate about improving our healthcare system." - 2012 HxD Attendee
