Jan Bruce is a seasoned media entrepreneur with a proven track record in high-growth, emerging businesses and turnarounds. She has consistently anticipated consumer wellness and health trends and has built cutting edge products to satisfy these demands in fitness, alternative medicine, holistic health, personal growth and balanced living. She has a passion for building consumer-facing products that help people make measurable improvements in health, wellness and healthy lifestyle.
Bruce is CEO and co-founder of meQuilibrium, the new digital coaching system for stress, which helps both individuals and corporations achieve measurable results in stress management and wellness. Bruce has identified “stress as the new fat” and notes that it is even trickier than obesity because it “operates more like a ‘silent killer,’ creeping up until it is too late to dial back.”
meQuilibrium provides people with proven, measurable methods to increase their stress resilience and live healthier, more productive and satisfying lives. The company’s product is an online, interactive program that offers personalized support and guidance for people wanting to take charge of their stress. The system offers a next generation blend of web, video and mobile technologies to deliver highly personalized, measurable 360° lifestyle programs. meQuilibrium focuses on the wellness/productivity/personal-growth marketplace which includes both individuals and employers seeking Saas solutions.
Prior to founding meQuilibrium, Bruce was Managing Director and Publisher at Martha Stewart Living’s Whole Living.com/ body+soul magazine, the category leader in wellness and sustainability. Bruce rebranded and relaunched Whole Living/Body+Soul in 2002 and then sold in 2004 to Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc. At MSLO, she successfully managed the high growth business unit and grew the readership from 200,000 to over 650,000 in four years. Bruce developed the award-winning content strategy for the brand, which now extends across print, digital, satellite radio and VOD.
From 2008-2009, Bruce also directed the wellness franchise at MSLO, with responsibility for strategy, revenue and business development. She built MSLO’s first free-standing, branded portal, WholeLiving.com, a destination site leveraging Mind, Body, Spirit, Wellness and “Green” subject-matter interest among women users and brands/advertisers.
Earlier in her career, Ms. Bruce served as CEO and co-founder of Integrative Medicine Communications, the leading digital brand in science-based complementary medicine, a content development/licensing company. Bruce’s first entrepreneurial venture was as CEO and Publisher, Walking Magazine/Walking Inc., which she turned around and then sold to Cowles Media.
Ms. Bruce is a recognized authority on women’s attitudes towards balanced healthy lifestyle and sustainable living. She is a frequent speaker on media turn-arounds and has been a featured presenter at Advertising Week, The American Magazine Conference, The Deutsche Bank Women on Wall Street conference, Harvard Business School, the LOHAS conference and the Green Business Conference.
A runner, yogi, avid cook, Bruce has been a member of the Guest faculty, Columbia University Publishing Course, graduate level program in digital and print media. She is also Entrepreneur in Residence for Chrysalis Ventures, an early stage venture fund with a focus on health and media technology, and is member of the Board of Directors of American Consolidated Media, publisher of local/community news properties. She is a graduate of Smith College.
