About Me

Jan Bruce is a seasoned media entrepreneur with a proven track record in high-growth, emerging businesses and turnarounds. She has consistently anticipated consumer wellness and health trends and has built cutting edge products to satisfy these demands in fitness, alternative medicine, holistic health, personal growth and balanced living. She has a passion for building consumer-facing products that help people make measurable improvements in health, wellness and healthy lifestyle.

Bruce is CEO and co-founder of meQuilibrium, the new digital coaching system for stress, which helps both individuals and corporations achieve measurable results in stress management and wellness. Bruce has identified “stress as the new fat” and notes that it is even trickier than obesity because it “operates more like a ‘silent killer,’ creeping up until it is too late to dial back.”

meQuilibrium provides people with proven, measurable methods to increase their stress resilience and live healthier, more productive and satisfying lives. The company’s product is an online, interactive program that offers personalized support and guidance for people wanting to take charge of their stress. The system offers a next generation blend of web, video and mobile technologies to deliver highly personalized, measurable 360° lifestyle programs. meQuilibrium focuses on the wellness/productivity/personal-growth marketplace which includes both individuals and employers seeking Saas solutions.

Prior to founding meQuilibrium, Bruce was Managing Director and Publisher at Martha Stewart Living’s Whole Living.com/ body+soul magazine, the category leader in wellness and sustainability. Bruce rebranded and relaunched Whole Living/Body+Soul in 2002 and then sold in 2004 to Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc. At MSLO, she successfully managed the high growth business unit and grew the readership from 200,000 to over 650,000 in four years. Bruce developed the award-winning content strategy for the brand, which now extends across print, digital, satellite radio and VOD.

From 2008-2009, Bruce also directed the wellness franchise at MSLO, with responsibility for strategy, revenue and business development. She built MSLO’s first free-standing, branded portal, WholeLiving.com, a destination site leveraging Mind, Body, Spirit, Wellness and “Green” subject-matter interest among women users and brands/advertisers.

Earlier in her career, Ms. Bruce served as CEO and co-founder of Integrative Medicine Communications, the leading digital brand in science-based complementary medicine, a content development/licensing company. Bruce’s first entrepreneurial venture was as CEO and Publisher, Walking Magazine/Walking Inc., which she turned around and then sold to Cowles Media.

Ms. Bruce is a recognized authority on women’s attitudes towards balanced healthy lifestyle and sustainable living. She is a frequent speaker on media turn-arounds and has been a featured presenter at Advertising Week, The American Magazine Conference, The Deutsche Bank Women on Wall Street conference, Harvard Business School, the LOHAS conference and the Green Business Conference.

A runner, yogi, avid cook, Bruce has been a member of the Guest faculty, Columbia University Publishing Course, graduate level program in digital and print media. She is also Entrepreneur in Residence for Chrysalis Ventures, an early stage venture fund with a focus on health and media technology, and is member of the Board of Directors of American Consolidated Media, publisher of local/community news properties. She is a graduate of Smith College.

Q&A with Jan

HxD asked speakers to tell us what inspires and drives them in healthcare and design.

  • Q1: What is your burning mission in health?

We spend most of our money on cost saving and new drugs (both of which are important) but behavior/lifestyle is still a predominant contributor to chronic disease. I want to help create a new standard for minimum well-being that gives all of us a fighting chance of long-term lifetime health.

  • Q2: What is something you want everyone to see?

    This comic.

  • Q3: Why it inspires you?

I’m an optimistic person who believes that in any time of crisis – there is an opportunity to create a new beginning. We have a more fragile economy and frazzled workforce that I have seen in my lifetime. We live in the midst of unfolding new technologies and economies that will undoubtedly change the way we live, work, communicate like never before. We can also apply these to our well-being and quality of life.

  • Q4: What is your patient story?

Here is the first testimonial we ever got from a customer at meQuilibrium:

First, I read the Bible. This was very calming and settling as I had been wanting to do more of it and not just think about doing it.

Second, I started the project about the photo and found myself cleaning the living room tables which was very needed. I then removed the clutter from the living room and placed my favorite photos on all 3 tables. My husband then came behind me and added more clutter to the tables which was a bit irritating but he wanted acknowledgement for helping and I kept the peace.

Third, I found several items I am not using and am donating them to the St. Vincent Thrift store this Saturday, i.e., clothing, posters for kids and collectibles from Sponge Bob that my daughter outgrew. I also am holding a Bowling party on 4/10/2011 with re-acquainting former clients that I used to be their caseworker when I performed Mental Health services in an Adolescent Foster Care program for Catholic Charities for 8 years. Some adults I haven’t seen for over 10 years and that’s exciting! I will be donating some items as gifts and prizes for the best and most unusual bowlers.

Fourth, I have been waking up earlier and sitting quietly and incorporating yoga and meditation in the morning.

  • Q5: Why HxD?

So many important health related products out there- but design and ux is so key to success. HxD is where rubber meets the road. Excited to join forces; the meQuilibrium team has a collective 50 years of digital consumer experience so we know how to design for ultimate engagement?

  • Q6: Why come to your session?

If you can only change only one thing about a person’s likelihood to get well, stay healthy, lose weight, stay productive, stay fit –deal with their stress. I will show you why this is so and how to provide simple solutions to help based on unique analytical insights we've gleaned from our work at meQuiibrium.

Stress is the New Fat

Stress is the #1 inhibitor to people adopting healthy behavior changes like diet and fitness. Stress costs employers $300 billion each year in healthcare expenses and absenteeism. One in 4 adults now characterize their stress as high or severe, and 80% understand that, left unattended, stress is making them ill, overweight, unproductive and with a diminished quality of life. This session will cover the common misperceptions about stress and its significance in behavior change; and then explain how stress can be managed in new ways, which give important clues to helping people with other behavior change issues. Bonus: I’ll provide the 10 rules for consumers and corporations to use to manage stress successfully.

"Last year's HxD conference was so amazingly inspiring, and has definitely caused me to strive harder and become more passionate about improving our healthcare system." - 2012 HxD Attendee
