About Me

An industrial designer and fine artist by training, Sean’s passion is in helping organizations develop innovative and future focused solutions. For Sean, inspiration comes from a deep understanding of people as well as the cultural, technological, and business trends that are shaping the world in which we live. Simplifying data into meaningful information helps him find insights that will drive the next idea and can be experienced by all stakeholders; help the team to see and visualize their thinking; and to tell a compelling story that captures the intent and sells the work through an organization.

Sean has led and worked with diverse project teams for global companies and across numerous industries. He leads a team at Continuum which focuses on understanding global trends and their implications for the future. He has taught a class on experience design at Tufts University, spoken at USC’s school of Architecture, has been published in Fast Company, and won Gold IDEA award.

Q&A with Sean

HxD asked speakers to tell us what inspires and drives them in healthcare and design. Check out our Q&A with Sean Brennan!

« Previous Next »
  • Q1: What is your burning mission in health?

My goal is to create more and better experiences. Everything we experience is mediated by our health; so unless we’re healthy, nothing is as good as it could be.

  • Q3: Why it inspires you?

I like how this app is able to immerse the user in an adventure story and gamify exercise. There’s so much opportunity in combining elements like technology, entertainment, and healthcare so that taking care of ourselves is exciting rather than a chore.

  • Q4: What is your patient story?

I hate visiting the doctor when I’m not feeling well. Trying to make an appointment; waiting rooms full of sick people; the mystery of insurance coverage; and the lack of transparency— all so my physician can tell me what I’ve already figured out on the Internet.

  • Q5: Why HxD?

Because it recognizes healthcare as an experience that can be improved so that people want to take part in their well-being.

  • Q6: Why come to your session?

The expectations of patients in the future will be different than the patients you know today.

The #NEXT Generation of Healthcare

Generation Me. Idealists. Technology natives. Self-entitled slackers. Social media addicts. Trophy kids.

These are the stereotypes of Generation Y, the Millenials. But beneath the stereotypes is a clear shift in how this generation approaches the world. We think that this shift will have a significant impact on healthcare. Gen Y has different expectations for healthcare, different definitions of what health even is, and wants to engage in their health in a profoundly new way. Most healthcare institutions are still trying to plan for Baby Boomers getting old. But it is time to also start planning for Millenial Healthcare. As patient satisfaction starts to matter more and more, healthcare services will need to figure out how to deliver for this audience – what attributes does Gen Y seek in its experiences and services? What can we learn from sectors outside of healthcare about what this next generation of healthcare consumers are going to demand from their healthcare experiences? And ultimately, what does that mean for design?

"Last year's HxD conference was so amazingly inspiring, and has definitely caused me to strive harder and become more passionate about improving our healthcare system." - 2012 HxD Attendee
