About Me

Helle Rohde Andersen is an Interaction and Service Designer at CIID Consulting. Helle is passionate about carefully crafting interactions, experiences and systems that are people-centered and human. With a deep interest in understanding complex contexts involving technology, people and discourse, Helle has worked on comprehensive research and design projects within the healthcare domain. Some of which include hospital and patient experience design for the Danish public sector, rethinking and redesigning the scope of type 2 diabetes care for a global pharmaceutical company, and most recently exploring the role that a patient's community can play for better and more continuous care and positive health transformation.

Q&A with Helle

HxD asked speakers to tell us what inspires and drives them in healthcare and design. Check out our Q&A with Helle Rohde Andersen!

« Previous Next »
  • Q1: What is your burning mission in health?

To bring the focus back to people and their needs and away from rigid structures and alienating processes.

  • Q3: Why it inspires you?

Emily Pilloton and Project H shows the power of design when applied to global problems on a local scale. By disrupting the existing models of education, and designing with people instead of for them Emily creates sustainable platforms for change that ultimately promotes user empowerment.

  • Q4: What is your patient story?

When my brother was 7 years old he went through longer periods of hospitalization. I remember this as a confusing and scary time for our family. When he finally came home, he brought with him a drawing of Mickey Mouse’s dog Pluto with his name and age written on it. He stuck it up on the door to his room and was very proud of that drawing. Might be that he just liked the drawing, but to me it has always represented that my little brother is a fighter and that he made it through a very tough time. I think we need more tangible things that can give us a subtle vocabulary to communicate and make sense of our experiences and interactions with the healthcare system. Both the positive, the negative, and the not strictly binary.

  • Q5: Why HxD?

HxD is a unique opportunity to come together with designers, patients, and practitioners in the healthcare design domain to cross-pollinate and exchange knowledge and ideas to be able to create more meaningful and sustainable healthcare design solutions.

  • Q6: Why come to your session?

Our talk will demonstrate how a new research framework and information visualization methods can inspire you to tackle challenging healthcare issues in ways that will provoke new understanding and build user empathy.

Understanding Networks of Diabetes Care: A Research Framework for the Healthcare Innovation of Tomorrow

Living with type 2 diabetes is a multifaceted condition and a long-term commitment. Patients don’t experience their care or participate in their treatment in isolation, they are surrounded by a network of people - family, friends, peers and care providers. This network of care affects how patients experience their condition, and their ability to manage it both physically, cognitively and emotionally.

Traditional design research methods focus on individuals and personal modes of behaviour change. Innovating in the diabetes care space requires going beyond the individual.

Working with Novo Nordisk, CIID Consulting assembled a 360º view into the networks of care, that support diabetes patients. By approaching the research from a systemic level and studying a patient’s network of support rather than individuals in isolation, the result was a rich and emotional view into the complex interactions and relationships encompassing a patient’s journey with the condition.

By creating a research framework that looked beyond traditional modes of health care delivery, systemic gaps were identified and opportunities for community driven care models were uncovered.

This talk will demonstrate how a new research framework and information visualization methods can inspire you to tackle challenging healthcare issues in ways that will provoke new understanding and build user empathy.

"Last year's HxD conference was so amazingly inspiring, and has definitely caused me to strive harder and become more passionate about improving our healthcare system." - 2012 HxD Attendee
