About Me

As an athlete and a health innovator, Martin is passionate about exploring the intersection between modern technology and our own innate wisdom about how to maintain the health of our bodies. While recovering from a rock-climbing fall, in which he broke his back and frustrated by his prognosis, he developed his own approach to rehabilitation. In reclaiming his health, he became galvanized to help individuals take ownership of theirs. He thrives when designing technologies that empower people to achieve an enhanced state of wellbeing.

Martin is a co-founder and Director of Product Management at Healthrageous, Inc., a digital lifestyle improvement company. Previously, he helped create a patient-centric model for care as part of an IT and service redesign initiative at Partners Healthcare.

A passionate social entrepreneur, Martin founded Endless Sky Designs, a glass blowing studio, that while decidedly low tech, was the first zero-net emissions glass blowing studio in the country and set him on a course to connect design with the digital world.

Q&A with Martin

HxD asked speakers to tell us what inspires and drives them in healthcare and design. Check out our Q&A with Martin Adler!

  • Q1: What is your burning mission in health?

To solve the Type 2 Diabetes epidemic by empowering people.

  • Q3: Why it inspires you?

Stress is an underlying driver of many unhealthy behaviors. This talk is a clear articulation of how one strategy; 'mindfulness' can be used by individuals to reduce stress and improve focus. I think developing highly personalized daily wellness routines that address stress will help solve our national health crisis.

  • Q4: Why HxD?

HxD exists at the intersection of design, which is human focused and medicine, which often is not. I believe there is a tremendous opportunity to leverage design, to help people regain a fundamental balance in their lives that will ultimately improve their wellbeing. To me this is largely about redesigning the logistics of our environment and aligning them with the reality of our rapidly changing culture.

  • Q5: Why come to your session?

You already know that people should be more active, eat better and carry less stress. Come hear real world examples of how this can be done using cutting edge strategies rooted in design/behavior change/technology. My session will relate these changes to real improvements in health, productivity and cost savings

Designing Work for Health and Profit

The workplace, where we spend much of our waking life, is the untapped frontier in population health. A healthier, happier and more productive workforce can be achieved by applying design methodologies to how we do this thing called ‘work’.

This session will address how cutting edge science and technology can be used to change behaviors and optimize workplace health. In doing so, we will define steps that individuals can take to improve their health and wellbeing immediately, how change makers and organizations can cut costs by improving the health of their workforce and how technology is revolutionizing the way we’ll work tomorrow.

Cigna Design Challenge

Too often as American health care consumers we rush to the doctor first and sort through the bills and paperwork later. What could inspire or motivate us to change our behavior so that instead we partner with our health insurers to understand costs, savings, and coverage options ahead of time?
